Is it always free?

HIV testing in London is free for everyone – including visitors, migrants and asylum seekers. The only time you’d need to pay is if you need results very quickly – for this you can test at home with kits from pharmacies like Boots and Superdrug.

How often should you test?

It’s recommended that everyone who’s sexually active gets tested for HIV and other STIs at least once a year. Remember, it’s your health – and your health is important. Some people are encouraged to test more regularly – see the recommendations for all Londoners, Black Londoners, men who have sex with men, trans people, women and young people. If you’re not sure what is right for you, we recommend booking a test at a sexual health clinic and talking with staff during your appointment.

Nervous about the test?

We understand you might be nervous about what the result of your test might be. However there’s nothing to fear. Treatment today can prevent and even reverse damage that HIV could have caused, so people on treatment can live long, healthy lives. The sooner you know your status the better for you and your partners. So we recommend booking a test as soon as possible.
