HIV Testing at Clinics or GPs
Prefer to speak to someone face-to-face? You can get tested for HIV at your GP surgery or a local sexual health clinic. It’s free, simple and confidential.
Testing in person - your way
Whether you’re more comfortable talking to a healthcare professional or just want to get everything done in one visit, testing at a GP or clinic is a great option. You can:
- Ask for an HIV test at your GP surgery—it’s your right, and you don’t need to give a reason.
- Visit a sexual health clinic for a walk-in or booked appointment.
- Get tested alongside other STI checks, contraception advice, or PrEP and PEP support.
How does testing go?
Testing at a clinic (or also at your GP surgery or pharmacy) involves a qualified professional taking either a saliva sample or a small amount of your blood.
There are two types of test used in a clinic, GP surgery or pharmacy:
- blood test – where a sample of blood is taken in a clinic and sent for testing in a laboratory. Results are usually available on the same day or within a few days.
- point of care test (sometimes called a POCT) – where a sample of saliva from your mouth or a small amount of blood from your finger is taken in a clinic. This sample doesn’t need to be sent to a laboratory and the result is available within a few minutes
If the test finds no sign of infection, your result is negative. If signs of infection are found, the result is positive.
Ask about prevention too
Your GP or clinic can also help you to prevent HIV. You can ask about:
- PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis): a daily or on-demand pill that protects you from HIV.
- PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis): emergency medication you take after a possible exposure.
- Condoms and lube: these are free at most clinics.
You don’t need to wait for someone to offer—ask the question, and get the care you deserve.
Nervous about testing?
You’re not alone. It’s completely normal to feel anxious about testing—especially if you’re worried about the result. But here’s the truth: knowing your status is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health.
HIV treatment today is highly effective. If you test positive, you can start treatment right away and live a long, healthy life. And if you’re negative, you’ll have peace of mind—and the chance to explore prevention options like PrEP.
Testing is about taking control, protecting yourself and your partners, and making informed choices.
How often should you test?
It’s recommended that everyone who’s sexually active gets tested for HIV and other STIs at least once a year – and always after unprotected sex with a new partner. Remember, it’s your health – and your health is important.
Some people are encouraged to test more regularly – see the recommendations for all Londoners, Black Londoners, men who have sex with men, trans people, women and young people. If you’re not sure what is right for you, we recommend booking a test at a sexual health clinic and talking with staff during your appointment.
