Self testing

Knowing your status has never been easier.

Test on your terms

Whether you’re testing for the first time or just keeping on top of your health, self-testing puts the power in your hands—literally.

Self-testing is a quick, private and reliable way to check your HIV status from the comfort of your own home or wherever suits you. You get your results in a few days, along with advice on what you can do next to protect your health. There are two main options:

  • Self-sampling kits: You take a saliva sample at home or wherever you choose to take it and post it to a lab. You’ll get your results by text, phone or email.
  • Self-testing kits: You take a finger-prick blood test at home or wherever you choose to take it and post it to a lab. You’ll get your results by text, phone or email.

Both are discreet, accurate, and easy to use. And yes, they’re free.

You can order a free HIV self-test or self-sampling kit from:

Nervous about testing?

You’re not alone. It’s completely normal to feel anxious about testing—especially if you’re worried about the result. But here’s the truth: knowing your status is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health.

HIV treatment today is highly effective. If you test positive, you can start treatment right away and live a long, healthy life. And if you’re negative, you’ll have peace of mind—and the chance to explore prevention options like PrEP.

Testing is about taking control, protecting yourself and your partners, and making informed choices.

Is it always free?

HIV testing in London is free for everyone – including visitors, migrants and asylum seekers. The only time you’d need to pay is if you need results very quickly – for this you can test at home with kits from pharmacies like Boots and Superdrug.

How often should you test?

It’s recommended that everyone who’s sexually active gets tested for HIV and other STIs at least once a year – and always after unprotected sex with a new partner. Remember, it’s your health – and your health is important.

Some people are encouraged to test more regularly – see the recommendations for all Londoners, Black Londoners, men who have sex with men, trans people, women and young people. If you’re not sure what is right for you, we recommend booking a test at a sexual health clinic and talking with staff during your appointment.
