Living with HIV? You're not alone.
Every Londoner has the right to expert HIV care—no matter who you are or where you’re from. With the right treatment, people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives—and can’t pass it on.
What to expect from treatment
Treatment is free and simple. It’s called antiretroviral therapy (ART)—usually one pill a day. It stops the virus from multiplying, protects your immune system, and helps you feel well. Most people reach an “undetectable” viral load within a few months – where there’s such a low level of virus in their blood that it doesn’t harm their body and can’t be passed on through sex. That’s what we mean by U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable.
In terms of how you’ll feel, some people get mild side effects at first, but they usually pass. If not, your clinic can help you switch to something that works better for you.
Just tested positive?
It’s normal to feel overwhelmed. You might be scared, confused, or unsure what to do next, but you’re not alone. Talk to people who understand—peer support groups and HIV clinics are here to help. You can start free NHS treatment as soon as you’re ready, and access more information and resources on our site.

Is it safe to have sex?
Yes—but timing matters. In the first few weeks of treatment, your viral load is still high. Use condoms until your clinic confirms your viral load is undetectable. After that, you can’t pass HIV on through sex. Still, condoms protect against other STIs—so they’re always a good idea.
What is late diagnosis?
Some people don’t know they have HIV until years later. That’s why regular testing matters – because without treatment, HIV can cause serious health problems. In 2022, people diagnosed late were 10 times more likely to die within a year than those who tested early. Testing saves lives.

HIV Stigma
If you’re living with HIV—or think you might be—it’s okay to have questions, worries, or mixed feelings. But one thing’s clear: no one should face stigma for their status. HIV stigma comes from outdated ideas. It can show up in silence, judgement, or fear—and it can make it harder to talk, test, or get support. But HIV has changed. With treatment, people can live long, healthy lives and can’t pass it on through sex.
You’re not alone. Whether you’ve just been diagnosed or are still figuring things out, there are people and services ready to support you. And we’re working to end HIV stigma in London—because everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported.
